Learn more about the Job:

The APSS therapist is responsible for the provision of clinical therapy services to children and adults with active cases in the Adoption Promotion and Support (APSS) program.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate services with treatment team, which may include referred family members, DCFS, mental health therapists, mentor staff, and other community service providers
  • Escalates any safety concerns or suspected child abuse or neglect to PC
  • Attend staff meeting as required with other Children's Bureau staff
  • Therapist to provide clients their private practice policies including; Informed consent, mandated reporting requirements, scheduling and cancellation and no-show policy
  • Participate in ongoing trainings to further skill set and to adhere to contract compliance, at an accrual rate mandated by Children's Bureau
  • Provide individual therapy to adoptive parents/ prospective adoptive parents/ prospective adoptive children, which such therapy sessions being a combination of in person (in the family homes) and some virtual contact
  • Maintain a focus of sessions; adoption focused therapy to address any adoption related challenges that are impacting a referred child or non-minor dependent, their family, prospective adoptive family/parents, including any resistance or hesitancy to consider adoption and the ultimate goal of the child or non-minor dependent being adopted or to remain safely in adoptive home. If therapy is not provided weekly, the rationale shall be documented in the case record
  • Therapist shall address the client's needs through use of evidence-based and evidence informed treatment modalities
  • Therapist will provide these services with a working knowledge of the Seven Core Issues of Adoption, adoption/attachment informed parenting, knowledge of the potential impact of attachment disruption, knowledge of how adoption/attachment disruption impact all members of the constellation, knowledge of racial identity development and implications of transracial adoption
  • Mandated reporter laws will be adhered to at all times in the course of service delivery and will adhere to reporting and client safety laws for any client presenting with safety concerns (Tarasoff, SI)
  • Therapist will complete all necessary client documentation and maintain file notes following HIPPA and BBS regulations
  • Complete contact notes for any contact with referred clients or others related to the client's treatment/services on-going and remain current
  • Document any client late cancellations (within 24-hours of appointment) and no-shows

General

  • Maintains confidentiality in matters of agency operations, personnel, and clients
  • Maintains positive communications with all agency staff, clients and visitors
  • Exercises good judgment in performance of duties and responsibilities
  • Supports existing agency policies, principles and mission
  • Other related duties as assigned
  • Complete initial and ongoing training hours as required by the APSS contract, which includes participating in trainings outside of Children's Bureau and independent study

Job Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Belief all children are "adoptable" and deserve permanency
  • APSS Professional Therapist Staff who provides therapy to families and children must possess, at minimum, a Master's Degree in social work, psychology, marriage and family counseling or a closely related field,
  • Non-licensed Professional Therapy Staff, who hold a Master's Degree, must be registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences gaining hours for licensure as an LMFT/LCSW or equivalent license.
  • Professional Therapist Staff must have a minimum of one (1) year of actual practice, rather than observational, professional adoption experience, including, but not limited to, an awareness of the developmental process of adoption and in adoption therapy strategies and techniques
  • Available to work flexible schedule including a Saturday and evenings as needed.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, efficient reports and meet deadlines for submission
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver license, current vehicle registration and automobile insurance
  • Proficient in MS Office programs, especially Word and Outlook (email) and comfortable with technology
  • Bilingual (English/ Spanish)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed LCSW or LMFT
  • Two years of adoption-based experience
  • Experience/ understanding of the themes of adoption and attachment disruption
  • Understanding of child welfare system
