The Best Start – Region 5 Network is a place-based initiative that seeks to unite residents, public and private organizations to shift the conditions that hold social problems in place with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for children and families in the Antelope Valley. The Best Start team, including the community organizer, work with the Network’s leadership to set and implement the key priorities and strategies that promote the initiative’s mission.

As part of the Network’s framework, Region 5 is seeking someone with a deep commitment to community organizing and experience with anti-racist, rural, and grassroots engagement/advocacy work. The role of the Community Organizer is to engage and sustain new members and leaders in Best Start Region 5’s Network.

Job Description

  • Bring together a group of individuals or organizations to achieve Region 5’s social change agenda through collective action.
  • Network and represent Region 5 in coalition/collaborative meetings and work collaboratively on joint efforts and campaigns with residents, community organizations and collaborative/coalition partners.
  • Conduct one-on-one resident engagement and house meetings to engage the broader AV community in Region 5 efforts.
  • Use a variety of means to reach out to community members, such as digital tools, including social media platforms and traditional media.
  • Galvanize support of public officials, faith leaders, grassroots leaders, allies, and new and diverse communities on Region 5 efforts.
  • Provide training and capacity building on organizing and systems change strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Position will lead the coordination of community engagement and involvement.
  • Represent All For Kids and Best Start in the Antelope Valley
  • Coordinate the development of local learning communities.
  • Maintains positive communications with all agency staff, members, and partners.
  • Exercises good judgment in performance of duties and responsibilities.
  • Diversifying membership through coalition building, grassroots base-building, and leadership development.
  • Working with City agencies and elected officials to advance strategies.
  • Representing the organization at public meetings, including City Council hearings/meetings; and leveraging neighborhood connections towards expanding our membership recruitment and engagement.
  • Knowledge of Popular Education and Asset Based Community Development in grassroot organization, develop activities to deepen understanding of the approaches utilized in community development for Best Start AV.
  • Develop and carry out community-based asset mapping efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned by Scope of Work.

Learning System

  • Promote shared learning and collaboration amongst the team to foster a collective responsibility towards achieving Best Start- Change Agenda goals.
  • Work directly with the Data Management Specialist and other Best Start team members to develop a framework and project plan for shared data and evaluation, including maintaining a database of partners within the Best Start catchment area, partner organizations, allies and their involvement
  • Disseminate data and other information to Best Start staff, collaborating agencies, community- based organizations, schools, parent groups, and other stakeholders as it relates to the change agenda of Best Start Translate materials in Spanish/English as needed.
  • Follow an inclusive, equitable, and diverse approach to the Best Start Work.

Job Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required, Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Sociology, Urban Planning, Political Science, or related field preferred or minimum 3 years hands on experience working directly as a community organizer in rural and/or urban communities.
  • Ability to take initiative and lead advocacy efforts within the organization.
  • Self-directed individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to carry out regular house visits, blitzes, canvassing and occasional community site visits.
  • Familiarity with systems change strategies and approaches.
  • Superior computer skills including typing, email, Microsoft office programs as determined by specific job requirements.
  • Familiarity with research, data collection, and social media.
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage diverse projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a requirement
  • Requires proof of valid CA driver’s license, insurance, criminal clearance, and driving record acceptable to All For Kids insurance provider
