Learn more about the Job:

Mental Health Specialist is responsible for implementing a community-based prevention effort for African American Women and Infants. Conduct intake and enrollment process, program orientation, consent, program assessment and identifiable crisis intervention measurables (ex: conducting the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) and participating in group sessions. The MHS will identify relevant mental health resources and community partners.

Job Responsibilities:

Prevention Efforts

• Conduct face-to-face intake and assessment to determine eligibility for enrollment into the Black Infant health Program.
• Conduct the client enrollment which includes and orientation, informed consent and initial assessment, and assign participants to FHA's for on-going case management.
• Responsible for conducting case conferencing with staff and others of the BIH team.
• Develop and maintain a working relationship with other local mental health professionals assisting families in identifying and reaching appropriate community resources.
• Participate in group sessions that focus on mental health issues to provide answers from participants and support to group facilitators.
• Provide mental health education and model parenting skills as identified
• Conduct trainings on the basics of maternal and infant mental health and identify parent leaders for management of support and self-help groups.
• Attend California Department of Public Health/Maternal Child and Adolescent Health sponsored BIH Basic Training as well as subsequent BIH Advocacy Trainings.
• Meets the Federal Financial Participation (FFP) objective of assisting individuals on Medi-Cal to access Medi-Cal services.
• Maintain confidentiality and safeguard the integrity of all client files and data connected to all BIH clients.11.Adhere to HIPPA regulations.

Documentation

• Maintain case files, case notes and all other forms/activities that are required to maintain files

Community

• Maintain high profile in the community.
• Develop and maintain effective working relations with all individuals and agencies affecting program within the community.

General

• Maintains confidentiality in matters of agency operations, personnel, and clients.
• Exercises good judgment in performance of duties and responsibilities
• Supports existing agency policies, principles and mission and other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

• Minimum of a master's Degree in one of the following fields: a) social work, b)counseling, or c) psychology from an accredited college or university.
• One year of professional experience working as a mental health professional that include maternal, infant and child health.
• Three (3) years of experience providing direct services to the target population, socio-culture experience(s) compatible for the target population.
• Understands and respects the values and beliefs of African America women and the Antelope Valley African American community.
• Fully embrace and support the BIH Governing Concepts of cultural competence, client-centered, strength-based, and utilization of cognitive skill building approaches.

Knowledge of the following

• Women's Health, including prenatal and postpartum mental health and psychosocial issues.
• Prevailing trends and policies in mental health.
• Understanding and location of community services, including but not limited to; social services, mental health, substance abuse treatment programs, domestic violence programs, legal systems, housing and other resources for referrals.

Demonstrates

• Cultural competency and ability to operate in a culturally affirming manner.
• Clinical experience with individual and group psychotherapies dealing in multiple systems of health and social systems.
• Ability to identify behavioral tendencies that impact functioning and recommend cognitive behavioral approaches that integrate client strengths into improving functioning and crisis intervention as available and needed.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills including, interpersonal skills, critical thinking, problem solving, organizational, collaborative within a team, time management and telephone interaction skills.
• Skilled collaboration, perform other duties such as: multi-tasking, general administrative, documentation, reporting writing, record keeping, planning and scheduling, and computer literacy including Windows, Word, Excel.
